UNITED WAY WORLDWIDE PRESENTS: THE HERO EFFECT Known for its community-building work in 1,200 communities in the U.S., United Way Worldwide brings its mission to television with The Hero Effect, a 10-episode docu-series on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). This inspiring series showcases stories of ordinary individuals who are making extraordinary differences in their communities. The real-life stories build on United Way’s mission to fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community. Presented by United Way and produced by Dolphin Entertainment, The Hero Effect debuts on November 12, 2016 and will appear monthly on OWN.
EXPECT TO BE INSPIRED The goal of the series is to inspire and motivate viewers to take action in their local communities and beyond. The series ties back to impact work that United Way is already tackling. The 10-episode season covers a broad range of issues, from connecting veterans with housing and jobs in Florida, to building children’s reading skills in Iowa. Each episode includes a call to action to visit the show’s website: www.HeroEffect.com, where viewers can get involved to build up their own communities. The heroes highlighted were, in part, nominated by local United Ways across the U.S.
MEET THE HERO EFFECT HOSTS In each episode, The Hero Effect’s hosts, Donald Driver and Emily Wilson, learn more about the project, and talk with the heroes about their inspirations and obstacles. With humor and enthusiasm, they help in the heroes’ work and meet some of the beneficiaries. Finally, the hero is surprised to be honored and supported, often by those they have impacted. The Hero Effect hosts are passionate philanthropists committed to stronger communities. Driver, a former Dancing with the Stars winner and Super Bowl Champion (2010) with the Green Bay Packers, established The Donald Driver Foundation, which specializes in serving underprivileged children and families by addressing health, wellness, safety, education, and career development. Wilson, a multi-talented actress with credits on HBO’s The Newsroom and ABC’s General Hospital and Castle, is also a passionate philanthropist who volunteers for several national organizations.
